NVidia has overlapped ATI's graphics card numbers since the GeForce 7000 series a couple of years ago, but few people noticed because ATI's 7000 cards weren't that memorable. nVidia started with the "GeForce", followed by 2, then 3, then changed to the standard "thousands" naming with the GeForce 4000 series, also released in 2002.
